A God Who Won’t Share Your Heart

Scripture: For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”
Exodus 34:14, KJV

All through the Old Testament, God repeats one message over and over: He wants all of you. Not a piece. Not a weekend. Not one hour on Sunday morning. He calls for exclusive devotion. A kind of loyalty that refuses to mix His worship with anything or anyone else. From the very beginning, God wasn’t looking to be added to the list of priorities. He demanded first place. Not out of insecurity, but because of who He is, holy, sovereign, and deeply personal.

The first of the Ten Commandments makes it clear: Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Over and over, Israel struggled with this. They didn’t stop believing in God but they kept adding idols. Golden calves. Asherah poles. Baal worship. They bowed at the altars of the nations around them, forgetting that God had chosen them to be set apart. Every time they divided their loyalty, the relationship with God fractured. And each time, God called them back, not to punishment first, but to repentance. His covenant wasn’t casual. It was sacred. Like a marriage. And when Israel ran after other gods, He described it as adultery.

But His call to exclusive devotion wasn’t just about commands. It was about love. “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might,” Moses told the people. This wasn’t religion, it was relationship. God wasn’t interested in half-hearted obedience or secondhand worship. He wanted their hearts, their loyalty, their love.

That call didn’t stop in the Old Testament. Jesus echoed the same demand: No man can serve two masters. The apostles warned the early Church not to love the world or mix light with darkness. God hasn’t changed. He’s still looking for people who will worship Him in spirit and in truth, fully His, not just when it’s convenient.

Exclusive devotion isn’t about perfection, it’s about direction. It’s choosing daily to turn your heart toward God and away from anything that tries to compete with Him. It’s saying, “Lord, You’re not just a part of my life. You are my life.” In a world that pulls you a hundred different directions, there’s peace and power in giving your heart to One.
